On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the girls varsity basketball team honored their seniors in the game against Mundelein, which they won, 49-40.
Wednesday was the last regular season game for the girls basketball team; they finished with a 15/11 record. The Wildcats faced Mundelein, for the second time this season with Libertyville winning both games.
The five seniors on the team- Jenna El Ghatit, Caroline Frea, Claire Keefe, Maggie O’Sullivan, and Riley Weis-started the game together and played the majority of the first quarter. Frea scored the first basket of the game, giving the Wildcats the lead. The lead continued to grow throughout the game, with Libertyville never trailing. Frea was the top scorer of the game with a total of 14 points.
The game was dedicated to the seniors on the team, known as “senior night”. Posters and picture collages of the seniors were outside and inside of the gym.
Morgan Manski, a junior on the team, said “I’m happy we were able to support [the seniors] tonight. They’ve been an important part of the team for the last four seasons, this one included.”
Before the game Maggie O’Sullivan, a Libertyville senior, and Rachel Tipperreiter, a Mundelein player, received the Northern Suburban Conference sportsmanship award. The NSC sportsmanship award is given out based on a player’s character and their actions towards teammates, opponents and coaches.
As the five seniors entered the game at the end of the fourth quarter, the crowd stood and applauded them to further show their support. The Wildcats will now be moving on to the playoffs (they are part of the Stevenson Sectional), their first game will be regionals on Wednesday, Feb 15. at Stevenson with the opponent still undetermined.
