DOI celebrates Scholastic Journalism Week
In honor of Scholastic Journalism Week, sponsored by the Journalism Education Association, more than a dozen Drops of Ink staff members have written about their experiences and involvement in journalism and the DOI publication. Read their stories below.
Giving power to those often overlooked
Drops of Ink gives a voice to the voiceless. A standard of the publication is that the staff should let people who have less power be heard, and that has been such an important thing to help shape the stories, pictures and layout design. Throughout this year, many ideas have been formulated around the unknown stories, pictures that may be controversial and designs that haven’t been seen before. One...
Storytelling gives a voice to the voiceless
Ever since I was young, I have been enthralled by the underappreciated art of storytelling and exchanging narratives. Of course, the stories told in my childhood were made up, but the ones that can be told through journalism are not; Drops of Ink means that I get to fulfill and actively practice my love of sharing stories. There are so many cool individuals out there -- yes, even in small-town Liberty...
It’s an honor and privilege to share stories
Journalism is important because it informs people with the truth, often sharing the stories of the untold and the unheard. I’ve always tried to reflect these beliefs in my work as a staff member on Drops of Ink, looking for stories that need to be shared but often aren’t. I’ve had the honor of interviewing mechanics who are part of a local union on strike against Napleton Auto Group; Illinois g...
Learning life skills through journalism
Drops of Ink has taught me many valuable lessons that will help me later in life. It has taught me communication skills and social skills that I otherwise might have struggled with. In-person interviews challenged my comfort zone when I first joined the staff, but now I have developed social skills that make in-person interviews a breeze. It has also taught me how to work efficiently with my peers....
Journalists empower their readers
Journalists write stories, columns and editorials for the purpose of spreading information and ideas. We delve into the unknown to present our readers with answers to their questions and the questions they didn’t even know they had. With these answers, the readers become more informed, more involved, and more empathetic individuals. The awareness that is caused by journalists gives people the opport...
Learning about myself and journalism
Drops of Ink has played a huge role in (bear with me, I’m going to be cheesy and stereotypical) finding my myself during my time in high school. Being a rather introverted person, Drops of Ink became a family in which I’ve become comfortable in. My three years on staff have showed me how opening your eyes a little wider to the world opens up so many opportunities and that everything you see can become...
Developing a passion for writing about more than sports
I’ve been in Drops of Ink since sophomore year, due to the fact that I love sports and writing about sports, so when I first joined staff, that is what I wanted to do. I didn’t know much about journalism, but through Drops of Ink, my eyes were opened to taking photos and layout. I also found a passion for writing, not just about sports, but about all kinds of topics surrounding LHS and the world. ...
We create beautiful work together
Drops of Ink gives a voice to various individuals in our school. That is why DOI is a substantial part of my everyday life. It gives me a sense of purpose and helps me stay informed and an active part of Libertyville High School. As this is my first year of being an editor, I learned so much more about journalism. Writing journalistically turned from a hobby into something even greater: an aspirat...
Finding my passion and the truth
Four years ago, I randomly applied to be a staff member of Drops of Ink as I was looking for something to do in high school. Little did I know how much doing this would change my life. Joining DOI is undoubtedly the best decision I have made in my high school career. As a four-year staff member, not only have I watched the publication grow, but I myself have grown with the publication. When I f...
Telling stories through photos
My sophomore year, I joined Drops of Ink without much prior knowledge of the class. A few of my friends were in it and loved it, so I joined hoping to experience the same feeling. I also wanted to improve my writing. I ended up loving it, and although I rarely write, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Drops of Ink allows me to tell stories through pictures, collaborate with peers I normally would hav...
Why DOI is important to me
From the beginning of this year, Drops of Ink has always been more than just another class period for me. It started out as just a spark of interest, as I wanted to know more about journalism, but it quickly turned into more of a passion. Every day, I look forward to going to third period because of the people and atmosphere that DOI provides. It’s structured where you are given the freedom to utilize...
We cover different, diverse and important topics
One purpose of Drops of Ink that I think readers see is our dedication to telling the stories of people and events that are different and diverse. DOI does its best to cover a variety of topics for the sake of igniting change or promoting awareness of an idea or event relevant to our society today. The publication won’t shy away from an idea because it could strike conversation; if the story is important,...
