Canned food drive beats last year’s count
LHS and Student Council concluded their annual canned food drive on Friday, Nov. 8. After breaking the 10,000-can mark last year, Student Council was striving to do more; with a total of 13,093 cans and other food items brought in this year, their expectations were surpassed.
This year was different than previous years, as the competition was between grades instead of second-period classes. For three Fridays in a row, students representing each grade stood outside the front doors, or inside because of the cold weather, and collected cans before school. As cans came, Student Council members were counting while others were loading the trucks to take them away to the Libertyville Township Food Pantry.
Finishing first this year were the seniors, with 3,730 cans collected; in second were the juniors, with 2,465; in third, the Sophomores, with 1,575; and the freshmen brought in 1,083. In addition, the Student Council Executive Board made a financial donation to buy more cans and get to the 13,093 total.
