On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Donald Trump was declared the 47th president of the United States after running against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and will begin his second term in 2025 after previously serving as 45th president during the 2016-2020 term. He has stated that he wants to expand on the policies he started during his first term.

Immigration

Trump has proposed to “seal the border and stop the migration invasion,” using the National Guard and police forces to carry out what he proposes as the “largest deportation operation in American history,” according to the Agenda 47. Specifically, Trump plans on stricter screening for illegal immigrants, ending birth-right citizenship for children born in the US with illegal immigrant parents, as reported by AP News. They also report that his agenda includes restricting migrants on “public health grounds” as he did in his “Remain in Mexico” policy, in addition to limiting or banning people from entering the US from certain majority-Muslim nations.

Abortion

After Trump and the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, ending a woman’s constitutional right to end a pregnancy and transferring abortion regulation to individual state governments, he claims that he is going to continue leaving the decision to the states into his second term as president, according to AP News.

Taxes

Trump’s policies on taxes tend to lean towards big companies and wealthier Americans, mainly due to his 2017 tax law, according to AP News. His plans include lowering the tax rate for businesses from 21% to 15%, undoing some of the tax increases that President Biden put in place for more wealthier Americans and removing taxes from the Inflation Reduction Act that help pay for climate change programs. Another change that Trump is hoping to make is no tax on tips and wages from Social Security.

Tariffs

Trump believes that trading with foreign countries can be harmful to American interests, AP News reports. He plans to propose tariffs of 10% to 20% on foreign goods, as well as allowing the US federal government to buy “essential” medicine from only US companies, pledging that he wants to stop China from buying parts of the country’s “vital infrastructure.”

Climate Change

Trump wants to focus on energy and transportation that depends on fossil fuels, like roads, bridges and combustion-engine vehicles. He states that he wants to end all Biden incentives that encourage electric vehicle market and that promote clean energy that is reducing the country’s need for gas and oil.

DEI, LGBTQ+ and Civil Rights

Trump has called for a repeal on the emphasis on diversity and legal protections for LGBTQ+ people, AP News finds. He also wants to stop government programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), using government money to push for this change. In terms of transgender rights, Trump wants to end “boys in girls’ sports” and wants to undue President Biden’s policy on protecting transgender students under civil rights protections. He also wants to make a law that would make Congress require that “only two genders can be recognized at birth.”
