Many snow sports take place during the winter season, such as skiing, snowboarding, curling and snowshoeing. Snow sports are recreational activities that take place during the winter season when there is snow or ice. Snow sports benefit people according to Columbia because they provide a good workout that improves physical health, mental well-being and quality of life. Two of the most popular snow sports are snowboarding and skiing. According to Diffen, skiing is a sport in which a pair of skis is used to travel on snow. To ski, you face straight ahead, lean forward, and have your feet facing the front. Snowboarding is a sport-inspired by surfing and skateboarding that uses a single snowboard to travel on the snow. For snowboarding, you have to face sideways with your feet in line with your body, perpendicular to the movement. Skiing and snowboarding are both popular winter sports. Both sports provide ways to enjoy snow-covered mountains, with options for various skill levels and styles.
I interviewed a counselor at Libertyville High School who participates in snow sports, Sarah Kelly. Sarah likes that skiing is a nice form of exercise in the winter. She states, “Being outside, outdoors, we get to visit all kinds of different places, skiing and snowboarding. So, that’s one of the things I probably enjoy the most, is just being outside, something to do in the winter time.” Ms. Kelly has been skiing since she was about five years old. For a very long time, she took over Snow Cats here as the advisor in about 2010 and has been running the club as an advisor for 14 years. Sarah got into skiing at a young age because her dad was a ski instructor, so they were at the hill even before she could ski. Sarah said, “My children have learned to ski at a young age too.” Ms. Kelly is one of the snowcats advisors along with her husband Sean, she explains, “So as the snow cats advisor, we have a group of kids who are on the executive board. They choose where they want to go. We also have specific ski hills that they like to go to year after year. Personally, how I stay connected is we have different ski hills that we like to attend. I follow some skiing stuff on Facebook, so of some Midwest skier groups. So, that’s kind of the way as a personal thing. rthrough this club, the kids like to go to certain ski hills year after year,so we kind of visit the same ones.”
There are currently over one hundred members in the club. The club travels to local ski resorts as a group and participates in the snow sport. Sarah Kelly is the advisor of this club and oversees the many ski resorts the club visits. Some multiple million-dollar resorts and companies profit from snow sports, skiing and snowboarding. According to travel.usnews.com, people travel all over the world to destinations, some popular examples in the United States are Big Sky, Montana and Vail, Colorado. Big Sky in Montana is one of the biggest ski communities in the country and is known for its scenery and having more than 300 trails. Even at a local level here in Libertyville, the snow sport is popular hence there is a snowcats club at Libertyville High School which is the ski and snowboarding club. The LHS Snowcats club travels to different resorts such as Granite Peak, Devil’s Head and Cascade Mountain. This popular snow sport is enjoyed by many.
