On Jan. 24 and 25, freshman and sophomore students took to the Studio Theatre stage to perform “The Little Prince.”
The play features the Aviator, played by sophomore Michael Bowman, as he recounts a story to his grandson, played by freshman Charlie Wells.
In the fall musical, Wells took the role of Flounder in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” He found his new role as the grandson to be refreshing, which contrasted much of his usual parts.
“I got to step out of my comfort zone,” said Wells. “I usually play characters who are wimpy and innocent, so to play a character that’s depressed was different.”
When the Aviator’s plane malfunctions, he becomes stranded in the Sahara Desert, where he meets the mysterious Little Prince. As the two get to know each other, the Prince shares his tales of his travels across the galaxy.
Between each switch from planet to planet, the ensemble took the stage to symbolize the Prince’s journey. The diversity of the ensemble added an extra challenge as they were required to switch seamlessly between roles.
“I basically was on stage the whole time, I got to be a part of many different scenes,” said sophomore Savannah Agee, part of the ensemble. “I got to be planets, I got to be stars, I got to be the businessman’s partner.”
One of these planetary characters was the businessman, played by sophomore Kade Burroughs.
“I think I started [thinking], what are the fundamentals of this character? What is the objective that he wants in the scene?” said Burroughs, when asked about how he embodies his character on stage. “[My favorite part of the rehearsal process was] just going deeper into his character, discovering more about him as you play him.”
For many cast and crew members, a favorite part of being in the production was feeling a sense of community.
“The best part was getting to know everyone in theater,” said freshman Natalie Krietsch, who played the Rose.
In the final moments of the play, the audience watches the Aviator and The Little Prince say their goodbyes before returning home, forever changed by the journey and characters they met along the way.
LHS Theatre’s next production, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle”, will take the stage on Feb. 7 and 8 in the auditorium.
