What if there was an opportunity to meet and interact with new people or people you wouldn’t otherwise talk to? What if you could hear stories and learn about new experiences? The Human Library gives you a chance to do that!
The Human Library is an organization that originated in Copenhagen, Denmark and has been around since 2000. It’s now in over 85 countries and six continents. It takes place in libraries, schools, universities, museums and festivals around the world.
At each Human Library event, people can be “books” where they share their story or be a “reader” where they listen to each story that is told by the book.
The goal is to allow for people to feel safe and comfortable when they share their story. It’s a place for no stereotypes or judgments. Instead, it’s a place that is welcoming and inclusive for not just the people telling their stories, but for the listeners, too. The listeners are welcome to ask the person questions at any point in their conversation. In fact, questions are wanted and appreciated to spark curiosity and learn something new.
Who are the “books?” Each person’s story represents a stereotype of a topic such as a disability or lifestyle.
Not only is one of the goals of the Human Library to create an inclusive place that breaks stereotypes on issues, but it also is a place to meet new people!
In fact, the Human Library is coming to LHS on March 18! Join us in the library after school to share your story and listen to other people’s stories. It’s an opportunity to meet new people and talk to people you might not otherwise talk to!
Everyone has a story to tell. Of course, not everyone is required to share their story, but it is strongly encouraged.
Don’t worry if you aren’t sure what story to share. Your story can be anything you are comfortable sharing with others – experiences, passions, discoveries, challenges and more! Prompts will be provided to help you generate ideas of what you could share if you need it.
We will split into small groups and everyone will get a chance to share their story and listen to other people’s stories.
Hear students, teachers, staff and community members share their stories! Ask questions. Listen. Bond and connect with new people. It is a chance to learn something new about other people at LHS and in the community. Clubs are also welcome to come and share stories – especially Tuesday clubs.
Everyone is welcome and snacks will be provided! We look forward to hearing your story and seeing the connections that form!
