On the shoulders of their ace pitcher, Madison Bumgarner, the San Francisco Giants are the World Series Champions for the third time in the past five years.
In a neck and neck series that required all seven games, the Giants closed out the championship Wednesday night in Kansas City to overcome the Kansas City Royals 3-2.
The Royals made an impressive run in their first playoff appearance since 1985, while stealing sports fans’ hearts from coast to coast; their young roster led by Lorenzo Cain and their stellar bullpen was the underdog the entire way. They began the playoffs on a streak of eight straight victories including upsets over the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card game and sweeping the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who held the best record in the MLB through the regular season.
The scrappy Giants also had a Wild Card spot to enter the playoffs, first slaughtering the Pittsburgh Pirates, then proceeded to beat the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals to reach the World Series.
The Giants’ bats, led by sluggers Hunter Pence (.444 batting average) and Pablo Sandoval (.429), mustered just enough quality swings to allow the pitching staff to do the rest. Clutch home runs by Travis Ishikawa and Michael Morse over the Cardinals led to their World Series berth.
The talk of the World Series, though, was 25-year old southpaw “MadBum” (Bumgarner) who arguably threw out the greatest World Series performance ever. In the series, Bumgarner won game one, game five, and closed out game seven to combine for 21 innings pitched while surrendering only one run on nine hits and one walk.
Even though the Royals were America’s team for the month, the hometown Giants fans were still no less satisfied the third time around. Following the final victory, the citizens of San Fran took to the streets, wreaking havoc over all of the city. In the end, the celebrations led to 29 arrests for public intoxication, 3 for assault, and 2 for public gun control, according to San Francisco police.
