Yesterday was much bigger than Super Bowl Sunday for LHS students, as school was called off for the third time this winter, with weather conditions, mostly snow, being the culprit.
The virtual non-stop snowfall from Saturday night to early Monday morning buried the town in about 17 inches of snow, according to weather.com. Once the game ended last night, students traded in their wings and football for hot chocolate and sleds.
With this much snow, road conditions weren’t good because of the increased time it takes the village to clear the roads. Student safety is also a large concern with conditions like today, as many kids would have driven to school in the snow-covered roads.
“The superintendent and administration always make the decision to close school after all necessary factors have been analyzed,” said District 128 communications director Ms. Mary Todoric. “There is discussion with our feeder schools, bus company, and often other Lake County high schools.”
Rumor spread through social media, mainly twitter, last night that the decision regarding schools’ cancellation would be made as early as 5:30 this morning; that was before it was ultimately called off around 9:30 p.m. last night.
“Obviously, our goal is to keep school open if we can safely do so,” explained Ms. Todoric. “We must look at predictions for what the next day’s conditions may be. Sometimes that means having a 4 a.m. conference call to make that decision. In the case of last night’s storm, we were able to make a decision and notify students and staff well before 10:00.”
