Their best finish in school history, the Libertyville competitive dance team finished second this year, posting a 92.12 score, after performing to “Impossible” by James Arthur.
There were 31 teams that made it to state and competed on Friday, Jan. 30, and that night, judges picked 10 teams to come back to compete for the finals the next day. In the State preliminaries, the squad scored 90.54, earning them a top 10 spot for the third straight year. Last year, the team finished sixth, missing the platform; this year it was a different ending.
“It was such an unbelievable feeling to achieve our goal because it meant all of our hours rehearsing the dance countless times at practice and added practices paid off,” senior Shannon Miller, a captain, said. “Nothing could have felt better than hearing our names be announced and getting to go across the podium and hold our state trophy into the air.”
That Saturday, the poms girls performed their same routine that got them there and again waited for results. After a few hours passed, the final rankings came out, and the 2015 team set the gold standard at LHS, coming in second.
“It was the moment we’d been waiting for for all of high school and what we’ve worked so hard for all season,” senior Abbie Gorman said. “We overcame all our hardships and it felt like we were truly getting recognized for all our hard work.
On Friday, Feb. 20, the team will dance their State performance in front of the whole school during the Turnabout assembly.
