Ryan Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson in the Marvel movie ¨Deadpool¨, based on the comic of the unconventional anti-hero. ¨Deadpool¨, which was released to theaters Feb. 12, tells the story of a former Special Forces operative (Reynolds) working as a vigilante-for-hire. He meets the love of his life Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) in a bar, and after a little while, he proposes marriage. Wilson then discovers he has terminal cancer.
Feeling guilty that Vanessa would have to watch him die eventually, Wilson leaves her unannounced. He volunteers for a shady experiment offered to him, one which promised to cure him by triggering the mutations that brought on his cancer and turning him into a superhero. This would also make him immune to any form of pain or illness.
While under this experiment, Wilson is tortured almost to death for a long period of time and after the procedure ends successfully, his tormentors (Ed Skrein and Gina Carano) reveal that their goal was actually to turn him and their other victims into super-slaves.
Wilson escapes this death sentence and creates a new alter ego for himself: Deadpool. He handmakes a costume for himself in order to cover his mutilated face and body, and vows to hunt down the people that destroyed his life
Warning: this movie is not for the faint of heart. The blood and gore was definitely unexpected and although the action scenes were enjoyable for me, those who do not handle these scenes well should definitely not see this movie.
Another unexpected feature of ¨Deadpool¨ was the humor throughout the film: I found myself laughing most of the time. Although a lot scenes in this movie could be considered dark — getting cancer, leaving a spouse, getting tortured, and seeking revenge — Reynolds’ character was constantly cracking jokes to lighten the mood, and it definitely worked. If you are easily offended or not a fan of crude humor, again, do not see this film as — to the delight of those of us who enjoy sarcasm and bold jokes — Wade Wilson definitely does NOT have a filter.
If you are looking for a superhero movie that isn’t overly dramatic and uncomfortably serious, ¨Deadpool¨ is the movie for you (also, do not read on because I may spoil some parts for you).
The ending was also positive, as all the loose ends were tied up. Predictably, Wilson’s torturers capture his soulmate and he has to find them, battle it out, and save her. He is not accompanied alone, however, as he meets Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), who are also characters in X-Men.
Although Wilson has avoided Vanessa for years because of his new deformities following the “procedure,” Vanessa does not care about his appearance and instead is angry with him — but not for long *wink wink*– for leaving her and leading her to believe that he was dead this whole time.
All in all, I would give ¨Deadpool¨ five stars (out of five) for its witty humor, realism, and gory-yet-necessary superhero action scenes. This is a must-see movie for all Marvel and X-Men fans, or anyone who would like to see Reynolds’ real talent — meaning not in the ¨Green Lantern¨.
