Did it happen? Did that really just happen?
Yes, yes it did. The Chicago Cubs are World Series Champions for the first time in 108 years (if you didn’t know already). In a game that will go down in the memories and record books, the Cubs eked out a win in 10 grueling innings that ended with reliever Mike Montgomery getting the final out of the 10th inning to give the Cubs what they’ve all been dreaming about…a World Series championship.
Through all the hardships and losing seasons, the Cubs have finally won, and Cubs fans could not be more overjoyed. No more “Lovable Losers.”
- A couple of social studies teachers at LHS, Mr. Matt Thompson and Ms. Amy Holtsford, both reminisced about their Cub fandom.
“I remember going to Wrigley for as long as I have lived. So I guess I have been a fan for 36 years and 32 days (that’s how old I am),” Mr. Thompson said in an email interview.
Ms. Holtsford became in love with baseball and the Cubs as a kid. Ms. Holtsford had wanted to play little league but was turned away each time she had applied because she was a girl. Yet that didn’t stop her as she played lots of baseball with friends, including times of games and catch during her school lunchtime for an hour when it was nice out. She would only eat for five minutes because she wanted to play some baseball so badly.
- Winning it all has allowed for Cubs fans to relish in the glory of a championship.
Junior and avid fan Lizzie Foley, in an email interview, said, “ I stood up when Bryant threw it to Rizzo and my whole family and I were just speechless for a second then we all started screaming, it was amazing!”
Thompson exclaimed, “I was so relieved. I am very excited about next year already, but at least I don’t have to say that next year is their year. This year was their year!!!”
Freshman Matthew Murbach said in an email interview, “When the Cubs won, I went ballistic. I ran around the house and ran on the sidewalk. I was overcome with joy.
- Now that the Cubs have finally done it, the stigma of them being a losing team no longer is a reality and now Cubs fans can rejoice in the celebration.
Murbach said, “I was happy and relieved. The curse was lifted and … my brother TJ would finally stop holding the 108 year drought over my head.”
- The playoffs were heart-attack-inducing to most Cubs fans at times, but there were also some favorite memories that they had.
“Definitely when the Cubs came back against the Giants when they were down 5-2 in the 9th Inning. Unreal,” said sophomore David Robertson.
Murbach added: “My favorite memory of this postseason was when I went to Game 1 of the NLCS, and Miguel Montero hit a pinch-hit grand slam to secure the win against the Dodgers.”
Foley stated, “My favorite memory was going to the opening game of the Cubs vs. Dodgers series because it was super exciting to watch (Montero hit the grand slam). The whole stadium was super energetic and fun-loving; we were on our feet for the whole game, and it was a great win!”
Thompson said, “The Miguel Montero Grand Slam against the Dodgers was pretty huge. That got them going in the playoffs on the right track. Beating Kershaw to clinch the NL pennant was also pretty awesome.”
Holtsford said, “There was so many, but it has to be when that slow grounder went to Kris Bryant, and you can see he has a smile on his face because he knows this is it. And then Rizzo catches it, and then just…pandemonium.”
Cubs fans, it is your time to celebrate and party like it’s 1908, as they say.
